Stranraer is a town located to the West of Galloway and Dumfries in the county of Wigtownshire, in Scotland. A harbour was built in Stranraer back in the mid-eighteenth century, and later during the early nineteenth century another port was developed. When the railway arrived from Dumfries, the town became a major port in the area. Stranraer also became the main Scottish port for the ferries from Ireland, for about the next one hundred and fifty years.

The train station that serves the town is Stranraer Railway Station, and is located about ninety five miles (152km) South West of Glasgow, and is the most southerly terminus on the Glasgow South western Line. There are approximately seven daily departures from the station to Ayr, the majority continue on to Glasgow or Kilmarnock. Stranraer has five primary schools, and the secondary school is Stranraer Academy, which is a comprehensive school with about twelve hundred pupils.

Public Transport:

National Express operate a bus service from Stranraer to London, and Scottish Citylink provide a service to Edinburgh. Stagecoach Western provide bus services for Stranraer and the surrounding areas. The local bus operators are Mculloch's Coaches, Irvine and James King Coaches. The closest major airports to Stranraer are Belfast City Airport, which is thirty nine miles (63km) away, and Glasgow Prestwick Airport, which lies about forty five miles (72km) from the town.
