Swansea is a city located in South West Wales, and is the second largest city in Wales, with a population of approximately two hundred and fifty thousand within the county. Swansea used to be a major centre for the metal Industry, especially Copper. During the eighteen eighties, more than sixty percent of the copper ores imported, were smeltered in the Swansea Valley area. After the second World War, the heavy metal Industry was in decline, and over the decades since, the majority of local people worked in the service sector.
Oxwich Bay has a two and a half mile long sandy beach, is located to the South of the Gower Peninsular, and was voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK by travel writers. It was admired for it's unspoilt and magnificent scenery and an ideal place to visit for all the family. Rhossili Bay is located on the Gower Peninsula, and has also won admiration for it's beautiful beach and scenery, and was once voted the best beach in the UK. There are many beaches located near Swansea Bay, including the popular surfing beaches of Caswell Bay, Llangennith and Langland Bay. The large (five miles long) premonade that stretches from Swansea Marina to the Mumbles, has panoramic views of Swansea Bay.
Road links to the city are provided from junctions 44 and 47 of the M4, and the A48 passes through the Northern part of the city. These roads connect Swansea to other major cities and towns including Cardiff, London, Bristol, Port Talbot, Neath and Pontypridd.
